Project Based Learining
Kid Power! takes a hands-on approach to learning, encouraging the children to become active in the discovery process. Some recent projects include: growing mold to learn about germs, "working" in the organic vegetable garden, watching live caterpillars turn into butterflies, and making a Cinco de Mayo pinata.
Process Art
Young children don't just creat art; they experience it. We strive to create projects and crafts that children of many ages and ability levels can enjoy. For them, it is more about the process than the final product. A great example is the Earth Day globe at the top of this page, which used both finger painting and sprinkle art.
"Organized" Dramatic Play
Often, dramatic play finds a place on our weekly curriculum. This allows children to be creative and experience stories and concepts in a new way--by acting them out. Loosely organizing dramatic play leaves room for the older children to create their own story lines and for the younger children to easily participate in a group activity.
Exercise
Exercise, dance, and gross motor skill activities are a part of our daily schedule. It is our job, as adults, to encourage healthy habits in the children we care for. Besides--it's fun!
Communication with Parents and Families
We strongly encourage family participation and work with families to ensure a consistent experience for children as the move between home and daycare. At the beginning of each week, parents are e-mailed a curriculum including activities for the week, the books we are focusing on, songs/poems to do at home, and the menu. We also have all-family events planned several times a year for Kid Power! families to get to know each other.
Respect for Nature and Other People
A big part of our subject matter involves learning about the natural world and other cultures. By learning about insects, for example, we learn their value. By celebrating Chinese New Year, we are creating the foundation for a thoughtful global citizen.
